Kinetic Books Company Enrolls in Algebra

Publisher Expands into Mathematics With Algebra I Textbook;
Offers Free Web Version For A Year

SEATTLE, Apr 19, 2007 -- Kinetic Books Company®, an innovative publisher of digital curricula for high schools and colleges, announced today that the company is extending its offerings to include algebra curricula. The company’s new textbook, Kinetic Books’ Algebra I, fully replaces a traditional algebra textbook. It is rigorous and comprehensive, instructing students in an interactive, compelling way.

Kinetic TextbooksTM are as comprehensive and rigorous as traditional print textbooks, but offer more. In the hundreds of activities, students perform tasks such as writing equations to kick a soccer goal using a give-and-go play, designing art using quadratic equations, and using trend-line analysis to determine acceleration. In the thousands of interactive problems, students get step-by-step assistance and one-click access to supporting material. Built-in scoring allows students, parents and teachers alike to assess progress. Presentation elements, called whiteboards, use audio and animation to explain concepts and show how to solve problems.

Kinetic Books is providing a free full school year’s use of Algebra I to instructors and their students who download the product before September 30, 2007. They can use the product during the entire 2007-2008 school year. The free product is available on the company’s web site now.

Uniquely designed to help students learn algebra fundamentals, Algebra I adheres to curriculum standards and is laid out similarly to a traditional textbook, in chapter format. Instead of teaching only with words, Kinetic Textbooks address different learning styles. Students who don’t learn well by reading have other options, such as listening to narrative or interacting with simulations and other activities to learn and apply algebraic equations and formulas.

"Many teachers we spoke with said they wished there was curriculum available that fueled student interest in math, as our physics textbook does," said Bruce Jacobsen, Kinetic Books’ president and founder. "Expansion into algebra is a natural progression for us, as mathematics fundamentals are crucial to understanding science."

A high school teacher from Franklin Road Academy in Nashville said, "The interactive features of Kinetic Books take instruction to a whole new level. Instead of struggling to visualize how something moves or changes, my students just open an applet and watch what happens. They can vary the parameters in a problem themselves to gain a better understanding of the concepts being presented."

Latest national and state research findings state that students who pass algebra are far more likely to graduate from high school and go on to college or university. Some students, however, fear algebra because it is so different from what they have learned. The interactive aspect of Kinetic Books’ textbooks makes learning the subject much more approachable. As a seventh grader said, "This is better and more helpful than a regular text book, because you can have things explained more than once. Being able to use this technology just makes it more fun and interesting than looking through a book the whole time!"

Teachers using Kinetic Books’ textbooks state that students become more enthused when shown hard-to-grasp subjects in engaging ways when students can experiment with them using interactive simulations.

"Our physics curriculum has already proven to help with team-building and problem-solving skills," continued Jacobsen. "We’ve incorporated cooperative and individual problems for students to solve, so they can work together to build and run a coffee shop business using algebraic equations, or decipher codes by understanding algebraic functions."

Kinetic Textbooks include self-assessment tools and homework problems in addition to text, narrations and interactivity, so teachers are able to spend less time lecturing to their students, and more time working with their students.

Pricing for Kinetic Books’ Algebra I will start at under $9.00 per student with a Computer Lab License. Other licensing models, online homework, web access and print format options are available. To take advantage of the free school year’s use offer, instructors will need to register at www.kineticbooks.com/support/algebradownload.php.
